(Pella) 2013 Atlantic High School graduate Sam Markham, who just completed his freshman basketball season at Central College, has announced he'll play football for the Dutch this fall.

After starring on both sides of the ball in high school, Markham is expecting to play as a wide receiver for Central College. He broke an Atlantic High School record with 1,033 yards as a senior. Markham was away from football last fall and realized how much he missed the game, saying he had a hard time even watching on TV.

His decision to play football brought other schools that recruited him out of high school back into the mix, Wayne State in particular, before he ultimately decided he'd like the opportunity to play both football and basketball at Central.

Markham admits some of the football coaching staff kept him on their radar and the team has been very welcoming. Spring workouts are already underway.

Markham notes the basketball staff was supportive of the decision and knew it was a possibility at some point. Markham was a regular contributor this season for Central's Iowa Conference Championship and NCAA Division III Tournament qualifying men's basketball team. He started three games, averaging 2.1 points per contest.
