(Atlantic) Retired Atlantic boys basketball coach Steve Blazek is one of two high school coaches going into the Hall of Fame this year. He and former Spencer Coach Bob Haak will both be honored at halftime of the Class 4A Championship on Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
The following is Blazek's bio from the State Basketball Program:
At Creston High School he lettered in four sports before attending Northwest Missouri State University and earning his undergraduate degree in 1974. A well-decorated career started at Newtown-Harris, MO with a three year stint that produced a 64-20 mark with a fourth place finish in the Missouri State Tournament in 1977. He then coached Fox Valley, Milton for two seasons and a 34-7 record before a five year stay at Sutherland, where his teams went 79-25. In the fall of 1984 he accepted a teaching and head basketball position at Atlantic. During a 29-year reign he guided the Trojans to a 354-219 mark in the rugged Hawkeye 10 Conference to run his career mark to 541-271 and tying him for 20th on the all-time win list. His Atlantic club finished third in the 2002 State Tournament. In his career he coached 10 conference championships and 10 teams into Sub-state He was selected twice to coach the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association All-Star game. He and his wife, Tammy have raised daughters Amanda and Cortney and live in Lee's Summit, MO.
