(Des Moines) Any hopes Harlan had of earning a second straight trip to the Class 3A state championship game were wiped away in a hurry during the Cyclone's semi-final setback against powerhouse Dubuque Wahlert. #1 ranked Wahlert moved onto the finals with a convincing 67-36 win.
Wahlert got out to an 8-2 lead and never trailed. The Cyclones offense was limited by a stingy defense throughout the night. Trey Lansman carried the load with 13 of Harlan's 17 first half points. He'd made six of the team's seven field goals before the break. Harlan was held to just 26.9% shooting in the first half including 1-10 from 3-point range.
Wahlert led by 9 at halftime and the game was not close in the second half. The 22-4 Golden Eagles began the third quarter on a 12-1 run to eliminate Harlan comeback hopes. They would outscore the Cyclones 22-8 in the third. Cordell Pemsl was a force in the paint with a double-double 14 points and 11 rebounds. Point guard Jared Walker led the third quarter surge with a couple of deep 3's on his way to a game high 19 points.
It was a frustrating night across the board for the Cyclones. Trey Lansman scored 16 points, but was surrounded by defenders on each offensive touch holding him to 7-21 shooting before fouling out in the 4th. Harlan's next three highest scorers were held to just 2-18 shooting. 3rd ranked Harlan drops to 23-3 overall.
One year after squaring off in the state title game, Harlan and Waverly-Shell Rock will have a rematch in the consolation finals. 5th ranked Waverly-Shell Rock, the defending champs, come it at 22-4 after losing 56-54 to #7 Central Clinton, DeWitt in the semi's.
