(Atlantic) An Atlantic teacher and former Forest City and Iowa State Golfer will be inducted into the Player’s Hall of Fame at the Jacobsen Building Friday night.
Kendra Henningsen, an Atlantic Middle School Reading Specialist, played high school golf at Forest City where she was a four time conference and district medalist. Kendra was also a two-time state champion. In 2003, she tied the state meet record for her low score of 36. She also qualified for the U.S. women’s Am in 2004.
“It’s very humbling and all that hard work paid off,” stated Henningsen in reaction to being inducted into the Players Hall of Fame. “There are a lot of great golfers that are inducted into the Player’s Hall of Fame, so it’s a great accomplishment.”
Henningsen admits she placed a lot of pressure on herself early in her career.
“My freshmen and sophomore years I had a lot of high expectations to be a state champion and I put way…too much pressure on myself my freshman year,” said Henningsen. “So that was a big learning experience about playing the game that I love, and playing for fun instead of putting pressure on myself to hit a certain score.”
Henningsen says during her sophomore year a teammate’s accomplishment motivated her to finish out her career with back-to-back state championships.
“During my sophomore year one of my friends won a state championship so I made that my goal. I put that in my bedroom and looked at it every day,” explained Henningsen. “So I put in a lot of hard work in the off season, and a lot of morning practices and it worked out. I was able to win two state championships and I was very happy with that.”
Kendra Henningsen went on to play college golf at Iowa State where she was named to the first team All-Academic team in 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008. In 2007, Kendra won the Iowa Women’s Am.
She also played professionally with the Symetra Ladies Tour in 2010.
Kendra currently lives in Atlantic where she is a Middle School Reading Specialist. During her summers, Kendra is an instructor with the Atlantic Junior Golf program. She is married to Brad Henningsen and they are expecting twins this summer.
