(Des Moines) #3 Harlan opposes #1 Dubuque Wahlert in the Class 3A Semi-Finals of the boys state basketball tournament tonight. The matchup pairs two of the most tradition rich teams in the state. Harlan has qualified for state 17 times, claiming two state titles. Wahlert has three state champpionships and a state record 26 appearances.

Both teams come in on the heels of impressive quarterfinal wins on Tuesday. Wahlert glided past Chariton 81-59 while Harlan zipped by Humboldt 64-44. During postseson play Wahlert has posted an average margin of victory of 16 points per game while Harlan has won all four contests by at least 20 points. Cyclone coach Mitch Osborn describes Dubuque Wahlert as a 'Loaded' team.

Coach Osborn says there isn't any one key scorer to focus on defensively like the Cyclones did in their win over Humboldt. Sophomore Cordell Pemsl and Junior Josh Carter each average over 15 points per game and all starters average over 8.5 for the Golden Eagles. With regular season wins over Class 4A semi-finalist Iowa City West and Class 3A semi-finalist Central Clinton on their resume, Wahlert may be the favorite, but at 23-2 overall Harlan is no slouch.

One advantage that the Cyclones do have is experience. All five starters are seniors and four of them played key minutes on last year's state runner-up team. One of the leaders of that strong senior class is Trey Lansman.

Lansman is coming off of a triple-double with 20 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 blocked shots in the first round. He leads Harlan this year averaging 18.9 points per game. Nathan Cave contributes nearly 16 a night for the Cyclones.

The winner gets either #7 Central Clinton or defending champ and 5th ranked Waverly-Shell Rock in Saturday's championship matchup.
