(Des Moines) Third ranked Burlington Notre Dame elimated 8th rated Adair-Casey in the first round of the Class 1A girls state basketball tournament Thursday afternoon. Burlington Notre Dame used a big 2nd half to cruise into the semi-finals with a 90-50 win.
Adair-Casey trailed by 11 at halftime, but was held scoreless over the first 3:25 of the 2nd half. Burlington Notre Dame's offense on the other hand was scoring points left and right. They put up 37 points in the quarter to build their lead. Burlington Notre Dame had a 21-4 surge to start the third and the game was not close the rest of the way.
Taylor Hickey led the explosion for Burlington Notre Dame in the 2nd half with 15 of her game high 27 after the break. Courntey Coffin had all 10 of her points in the 2nd half, and Riley Killbride added 16 for the game.
London Vais contributed 23 for the Bombers, who wave goodbye to three key seniors. London Vais, Danni McCorkel, and Anna Mulder all graduate for Adair-Casey. Three sophomore starters return for the Bombers with Shelby Sorenson, Zoey Dinkla, and Emma Ferguson. Also back for next season is key reserve, sophomore Miranda Plowman.
Adair-Casey's season ends with 23 wins and 4 losses. Burlington Notre Dame improved to 22-3 heading into their semi-final matchup with #2 (24-1) Janesville. Janesville won a fairly close ballgame with Rockford 58-46.
