(Atlantic) Two area teams with good basketball tradition will compete tonight for a spot in the Class 2A Boys State Basketball Tournament. #5 (22-1) Treynor takes on #7 (19-4) Kuemper Catholic in a substate final that was pushed back from Saturday night and moved from Harlan to Atlantic.
Kuemper Catholic seeks their 14th state tournament appearance in school history. The Knights have been to Des Moines twice in the last four years including a 3rd place finish a season ago. Treynor is gunning for their 13 trip to state. The Cardinals last trip came in 2011.
During the tourney trail, Kuemper Catholic has looked very tough to beat. The Knights have picked up wins over OA-BCIG, 75-52 and over IKM-Manning 62-37. IKM-Manning is the lone team to have defeated Treynor this season. The Cardinals postseason run includes a lopsided win over Clarinda and a nailbiter in overtime against St. Albert that saw Treynor advance 53-47.
The duo of Cole Neary and Sam Brincks lead Kuemper Catholic. The two seniors are future division one football players, and combine for 32 points and over 18 rebounds per game.
The Cardinals feature a fairly balanced scoring attack with Jacob Flathers, Nick Paulson, and Trey Robinson all averaging double figures and Nolan Chapman at 9.3 points per game.
