(Harlan) Taylor Frederick scored 20 points on her 16th birthday and Harlan celebrated with a 2nd straight trip to Des Moines. The Cyclones qualified for the state basketball tournament with a 57-35 win over Boone.
After a slow start for both teams the Cyclones used an 8-0 first quarter run to seize control of the game. The game was rarely close from that point on. Harlan built a 17 point lead by halftime and would lead by double-figures the rest of the way. Boone did make an 11-0 run at one point in the 2nd half, but Harlan had a big enough cushion to withstand the charge.
In addition to the 20 points scored by Frederick, Jordyn Moser and Jess Schaben each added a dozen for Harlan.
The Cyclones went in as an underdog last year, but finished as the state runner up. This year they'll go in with the target on their back carrying the #1 ranking and an undefeated record.
Harlan begins the state tournament as the first game in the Class 4A field by taking on #10 (17-6) North Scott. The game will be played at 6:45 on Tuesday.
