(Adair) Adair-Casey came away with a hard fought 55-51 win over Exira-EHK Friday night in regional semi-final play. Led by Senior London Vais who came up with 29 points, Adair-Casey improves to 22-3 on the season.
Vais opened the game by making back to back jumpers from the right baseline to give the 8th ranked Bombers an early edge. They'd race out to an 8-2 lead and got scoring from all five starters in the first half. They stretched the lead up to double-figures in the 2nd quarter before leading by 9 at the break, 28-19.
In the second half they quickly built the lead back up to double-figures as their defense held Exira-EHK scoreless through the first 4:15 of the third. The Spartans though would mount a comeback heading to the 4th. Senior Sidney Parker scored six of her eight points in a two minute span to kickstart an 8-1 spurt to end the quarter. That run continued into the 4th, ending up as a 15-1 stretch that tied the game in the final five minutes.
The Spartans would take their first lead of the game at 45-44 with 4:36 left, but Adair-Casey responded. London Vais scored 18 of her team's 27 second half points, including a 5-0 run all on her own in the final minutes to turn a 47-all tie into a 52-47 Adair-Casey lead. Exira-EHK never got things back to a one possession game from that point on.
Exira-EHK's season comes to an end at 17-6 on the year. The Spartans lost just four games after the holiday break, with three of those coming to Adair-Casey. The Spartans lose four seniors, Parker, Clarie Paulsen, who hit a big three during the late run, Hannah Smith, and Taylor Paulsen. Rachel Smith led Exira-EHK with 18 points and Mara Burmeister battled foul trouble, but still managed 10 points.
Adair-Casey coach Cory Bartz mentioned after the game that this is as far as Adair-Casey has ever been in five-player girls basketball. They Bombers have just one state qualification, which came in 1992. Adair-Casey meets Kingsley-Pierson at Manning on Monday in a game we will have on KSOM. 17-7 kingsley-Pierson defeated #10 Ar-We-Va 56-50 Friday night.
