(Atlantic) Carroll’s third quarter scoring spree spelled doom for Atlantic in a boy’s non-conference basketball game at Atlantic Monday night. The Tigers, trailing 35-31 at the halftime break, outscored Atlantic 30-6 to start the second half and held the Trojans to just four points in the third quarter.
Atlantic was impressive in the first half. Trailing 16-11, Sophomore Ryan Hawkins loaded and fired a three point shot at the first quarter buzzer to close the gap to 16-14. The momentum continued for the Trojans in the second quarter outscoring the Tigers 19-6. The run was sparked by three straights shots from beyond the arc. Nick Pohjasky, Garrett Franken and Hawkins all connected during the 9-0 run. Hawkins would connect again to give Atlantic a 28-19 lead in the middle of the second. That lead was sliced to 35-31 at the halftime break.
The Tigers outscored Atlantic 21-4 in the third quarter and took a commanding 52-39 lead. Atlantic was able to re-group with a 17-point fourth quarter. However the mountain was just to steep to climb at that point.
Cody Netusil led the Tigers with 20-points and Addison Ross and Eli Cleveland each pitched in eleven each.
Ryan Hawkins led Atlantic with 26-points. Joey Walker knocked down 10 and Nick Podhjasky added eight.
Atlantic Travels to Denison on Thursday night. Carroll closes out the season at Harlan.
