(Elk Horn) Evan Hansen and Trey Sander return to Wells Fargo Arena for the State Wrestling Tournament later this week. For Hansen it's the third trip of his career after qualifying as a freshman at 119 and winning it all as a sophomore at 145. Sander, a senior, will make his 2nd state appearance following a third place finish at 195 a season ago.
Both Hansen and Sander topped 100 career wins early this season. Hansen is a perfect 55-0 on the year. Sander heads to state with a 44-2 overall mark. His lone losses are both to unbeaten Ben Wellman of Tri-Center, each loss came by a single point.
Exira-EHK coach Rick Anderson says Hansen has seen 10-12 state rated opponents to help prepare him for state. The main one that stands out is a win over Class 2A #1 Cash Wilcke at a tournament in Ida Grove a few weeks back.
Hansen is ranked #1 at 182, Sander is #3 at 195. Ahead of Sander in the rankings is Ben Wellman of Tri-Center and Tyler Hoffman of East Buchanan. Sander defeated Hoffman in the third place match last year. Hoffman and Wellman are both undefeated.
