(Red Oak) (1-3) Atlantic travels to (1-0) Red Oak tonight in a Hawkeye Ten Conference girl’s basketball game. Atlantic’s three losses are to Council Abraham, Lincoln, Denison/Schleswig, and St. Albert. The Trojans defeated Carroll High 65-29 on December 2.
Trojan Head Coach Casey Pelzer is excited with the potential of his young team.
“The room for improvement is as high as it has ever been and I know we can get so much better,” said Pelzer. “Part of that is we have some players that have put the time in and part of that is we have some girls with limited experience.”
With that said Pelzer admits his team can win their next four games or lose all four. It starts with a good Red Oak team tonight.
“They return their big three in Kate Walker, Grace Blomstedt and Blake Bergren,” said Pelzer. “Blomstedt will be tough to stop inside because she is such a tall lanky athlete.”
The Tigers rank fifth in some 3A polls and are coming off of a season opening win over Lewis Central last Friday night. Coach Pelzer says the Tigers are playing with a lot of confidence right now.
“They put together a district run a year ago and made it to the state tournament and have Walker, Blomstedt, and Bergren that have a lot of success, and they are coming off of a win over Lewis Central,” said Pelzer.
Red Oak Junior Kate Walker scored 17-points in the win over Lewis Central and Junior Grace Blomstedt chipped in 10, and grabbed nine rebounds.
Atlantic freshman Catherine Leonard leads the team in scoring with 12.3 points a game, 11-rebounds and is shooting 85-percent from the free throw line. Erin Olson is averaging 12-a game.
Tip-off is slated for around 7:30 p.m. We will have the game on 95.7 F.M., Rich Mitchell will join me for the broadcast.
