(Atlantic) Denison/Schleswig’s third quarter defense proved to be the difference Tuesday night in a 38-37 win over Atlantic in a girl’s basketball game at Atlantic.
Denison/Schleswig led 11-10 at the quarter break, but two back-to-back three pointers by Erin Olsen and Macey Schmidt gave Atlantic an offensive boost and a 21-19 halftime lead.
It didn’t last long, the Monarchs came out in the third quarter and outscored Atlantic 9-2 and never relinquished the lead after that.
Denison/Schleswig slowed the pace in the fourth quarter and melted the clock an several offensive possessions to hang on to the 38-37 win.
Denison/Schleswig’s 6’1 senior, Valerie Johnson led the team with 15-points and Sadie Petersen added 10. Megan Ellerbeck finished the night with 7-points, Samantha Pick had 4, and Amber Hrabrick pitched in 2.
Erin Olsen led the Trojans with 17-points and freshmen Catherine Leonard added 15-points. Leonard finished the night a perfect 9-9 from the free throw line.
The Trojans start the season 0-2. The Monarchs begin the season 1-0.
