(Audubon) The Wheelers and Wolverines both bring solid defense and sound running games when they clash Monday night in a Class A second round football game at Audubon.
East Mills has outscored their opponents 33-6 up to this point.
“We obviously pride ourselves on defense and we work on it just like we do offense,” stated East Mills Head Coach Andy Irwin. “We feel one of our biggest attributes has been our speed and our ability to get a lot of our players to the ball. And we also like our kids to understand what the opposing team is doing offensively and they have done a very good job of knowing what the game plan is and carrying out the game plan.”
The East Mills offense is led by a rushing attack that has yielded 2,209 yards. Wolverine running back Colby Jennings leads the attack averaging 7.0-yards per carry on 172-carries for 1,207-yards and 18 touchdowns.
Audubon defense has been solid as well outscoring the opposition 31-11.
“Our defense has become a very physical team compared to last year,” explained Wheeler Co-Head Coach Dustin Christensen. “The kids have taken on the task of being the more aggressive team and it has really paid off for us. We have forced an awful lot of turnovers this season and three now for touchdowns.”
Audubon has been equally impressive on offense led by running back Riley Jones, who has rushed for 1,234-yards, an average of six-yards per carry, and 25-touchdowns.
Both teams have talented Quarterbacks. Wolverine junior signal caller Logan Curran is 40-84 for 882 yards and 10-touchdowns, and just three interceptions. Audubon junior Quarterback Trevor Smith has completed nearly 57-percent of his passes for 734-yards, six touchdowns and 12-interceptions. Smith has also shown the ability to run the football with 391-yards on the ground so far this season.
East Mills will have to contend with Wheeler linebacker Dylan Jensen who has 99-tackles on the season, 15 of those for losses and 3-sacks. His supporting cast isn't too shabby either. Matt Fett has 75-tackles on the season, 14 of those for losses and four sacks. Matthew Smith-Petersen is close behind with 70-tackles, and 14-tackles for loss.
East Mills is led defensively by 5'9, 171, senior Linebacker, Michael Story who enters the contest with 128-tackles, 23 of those for a loss and three sacks. Colby Jennings is second on the team in tackles with 73, Josh Hopkins has 71, and Colton Story is fourth on the team with 65.
Special teams and turnovers may play a big factor in this contest like most games of this magnitude and these two teams have been very successful in creating turnovers. For instance; East Mills boasts 15-interceptions and 9 fumble recoveries. The Wheelers have recovered seven fumbles and picked off 12-passes, including Colby Rattenborgs 103-yard pick six against Riverside last Wednesday night.
Kick-off is slated for 7:00 o'clock. The game will be broadcast on 95.7 F.M., pre-game starts at 6:30 p.m.
