EXIRA-EHK FOOTBALL GETTING STATEWIDE RECOGNITION

(Exira) The Exira-EHK football team is inching closer to their season opener. The Spartans are scheduled to start off with Boyer Valley in Week 1 this Friday night. The team checks in at #1 in both the Des Moines Register and Radio Iowa pre-season polls.

Spartan head coach Tom Petersen says the team should feature a more balanced offense this season with more pass-catching athletes than they had a year ago. Replacing last year’s talented offensive line has been one of the things to keep an eye on in the pre-season and coach Petersen says Tyler Jacobsen, Joe Harris, and Zach Kliefoth have locked down the three starting spots.

When it comes to opposing Boyer Valley this Friday night, coach Petersen says they are a better team than the one Exira-EHK beat 70-14 to start last season. A couple of things he’ll be keeping an eye out for in the first game of the season is keeping the penalties and turnovers to a minimum.

Exira-EHK is one of the few teams in their district that did not have a Week 0 game. The Spartans saw district three contenders all win in impressive fashion Glidden-Ralston defeating Murray, West Harrison upending Fremont-Mills, and Coon Rapids-Bayard trouncing Grandview Park Baptist.
