(Des Moines) Harlan Cyclone baseball will come your way Tuesday at around 8:00pm on KSOM. Harlan will take on Dallas Center-Grimes with the winner moving onto Friday's (August 2nd) semi-finals against either Chariton or Clear Lake.
3rd Ranked Harlan is the number two seed in the 3A field while unranked Dallas Center-Grimes, the defending state champion is seeded sixth. The Cyclones come in with a 28-7 record. Their path to the state tournament went like this: an 8-7 over Atlantic in extra innings in the first round, then a 6-2 decision over Carroll the district finals, the Cyclones largest margin of victory in the post season so far came in their 7-1 substate win over Glenwood. For 21-13 Dallas Center-Grimes, they beat Knoxville, Bondurant-Farrar, and Norwalk by scores of 7-2, 11-6, and 5-3. This is Harlan’s 13th state tournament appearance and third in a row. The Cyclone’s have claimed two state titles with those coming in 1996 and 2003. Dallas Center-Grimes is making their fifth state tourney trip, they won it all last year.
By the numbers, the teams appear very similar. Neither team is an offensive juggernaut, both have hung their hat on pitching and defense. Dallas Center-Grimes is allowing just 3.2 runs per game while Harlan is giving up only 3.5 runs per contest.
