(Harlan) Nick Kaufman’s RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted Harlan passed Atlantic 8-7, in a Class 3A District Semi-Final baseball game at Harlan Friday night.

The Cyclones opened up a three run lead in the bottom of the first inning. Nick Tarney and Nick Kaufman each knocked RBI singles and Nate Getty’s scored on a Jake Daeges ground ball. But, Atlantic answered in the top of the second with three runs. Brandon Holmes smacked a two-RBI single and Holmes plated the third run for the Trojans on Joey Walkers RBI fly to tie the game at 3-a piece.


The Trojans gained a 5-3 lead in the top of the fifth inning on Chad Christiansen’s two-RBI single. But the Cyclones narrowed the gap to a run in the bottom of the frame on a Jake Daeges RBI grounder to leave the score at 5-4 after five. Joey Walker’s RBI single in the top of the sixth extended Atlantic’s lead to 6-4. But, Harlan went to work in the bottom of the inning scoring three runs on one hit. Juhl smacked an RBI single, Cale Stork sailed a sacrifice fly and another run was walked in to give the Cyclones just their second lead of the night 7-6. The Trojans battled back and tied the game 7-7 in the top of the seventh inning when Chad Christiansen scored from third on passed ball and held the Cyclones scoreless in the bottom half of the seventh sending the game into extra innings.


The contest wasn’t decided until the bottom of the ninth when Kaufman knocked a line drive to deep left center field scoring Derek Leinen who was standing at second base.


Jake Daeges picked up the win in relief for (26-7), Harlan. Chad Christiansen took the loss for Atlantic, who ends their season at (10-22).


Derek Leinen led the Cyclones offensively with two hits. Dalton Franken went 3-5 at the Plate for Atlantic.
