(Harlan) Derek Leinen scored on Nate Getty’s ground ball in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Harlan past Atlantic 5-4 in a high school baseball game at Harlan Thursday night.
Leinen led the Cyclones with two doubles and pitched six complete no hit innings before he was replaced by Nick Tarney in the top of the seventh inning.
Atlantic would end up with only one hit on the night but it was a big one. Dalton Franken hit a bases loaded double to tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the seventh inning. But the Cyclones rallied back in the bottom of the eighth inning with Leinens’ lead off double and scored from third on a Nate Getty’s one out ground ball. Leinen was able to slide under Kray Lukehart’s tag at the plate for the win.
The Trojans jumped out to a one-nothing lead in the top of the first. Kray Lukehart led off with a walk and stole two bases and scored on Dalton Franken’s Sacrifice fly. Harlan took a 2-1 lead in the second. Leinen doubled and scored on a wild pitch and Getty’s scored from second on Dillon Sears two out single. The Cyclones tacked two more runs on the board in the fifth inning to lead 4-1. But Atlantic tied it in the top of the seventh inning on Franken’s three RBI double before Harlan rallied back in the bottom of the eighth to win 5-4.
Harlan extends its record to 13-5 and 9-3 in the Hawkeye Ten Conference. Atlantic falls to 4-13 and 2-7 in the Conference.
