(Des Moines) Red Oak's doubles team of Pete and Kate Walker claimed the championship in the Class 1A co-ed state tennis tournament held Tuesday at Drake's indoor tennis facility.
The Walkers breezed through into the semi-finals, losing just one set along the way. Then in the semi's they beat Davenport Assumption's team 6-1, 6-2. In the finals they met a team from Boone and won 6-2, 6-3.
Also competing for Red Oak yesterday was the team of Zoey Baker and Jordan Nelson who made it all the way to the quarterfinals before losing 6-0, 6-0 to the eventual third place squad from Waterloo Columbus.
Shenandoah also had two teams in the field while Clarinda and Audubon each sent one group.
For Shenandoah, Jacob Holmes and Tarynee Kinghorn lost 7-6, 6-1 in round one. Brad Young and Hannah Daily also came up short for the Mustangs in the first round 5-7, 6-2, 1 (3).
Audubon's Bradley Nissen and Maddie Christiensen lost 6-0, 6-2 in the first round. The were defeated by Lindsay McGonegle and Francis Hart of Waterloo Columbus.
Clarinda's Krista Rodgers and Nate Jones defeated their first round opponent 6-2, 6-0 before being eliminated in round two.
