(Elk Horn) Despite only returning two letter winners from last year's team, the Exira-EHK baseball team is off to an undefeated start to the season. The team has a 1.31 earned run average and are holding opponents to a .138 batting average.
The Spartans improved to 5-0 with Monday's 11-0 win over Orient-Macksburg. Zach Kliefoth, who has the best pitching stats on the staff, picked up the win on the mound. Kliefoth pitched five shutout innings with 11 strikeouts. On the season Kliefoth is yet to allow a run in his 10 innings pitched. He boasts a 2-0 record and has allowed only four hits. Tyler Jacobsen is also 2-0 on the mound. Coming off of a breakout freshman season, Jacobsen has a 1.40 ERA with 27 strikeouts and only nine hits allowed in 15 innings.
Offensively the team has been no slouch with an offensive .310 batting average as a team with an average of just under 8 runs per game. Joe Harris led the charge in Monday's win with a 3-3 day that included a double, a home run, and four RBI. Harris (.400) is one of three Spartan hitters along with Jared Hansen (.600) and Jacobsen (.471) hitting .400 or better on the year.
