(Indianola) The NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships were held in Wisconsin May 24th and 25th. Atlantic High School Graduate John Cord, a senior at Simpson, placed 6th in the nation in the decathlon. A 184-05 throw in the javelin helped propel Cord to All-American status.
It brings an end to an interesting athletic path for Cord at Simpson. Cord started out as a basketball player who also dabbled in track early on in his four years. Time with the baseball team is also on Cord’s resume.
In the end Track and Field turned out to be the biggest area of success. Cord claimed a conference title in the triple jump as a freshman. He would add two javelin conference crowns and one in the long jump along the way. It wasn’t until this year that he focused on the decathlon and he ends up placing 6th in the nation.
