(Ames) Consistency tends to pay off in the sport of golf. The Creston/O-M boys golf team experienced that first hand on their way to snatching the Class 3A Boys State Golf Championship on Saturday.
The Panthers stayed steady with a 323 on day one and 324 the following day while other top contenders Clear Lake (320, 333) and Decorah (329, 321) saw more fluctuation from one day to the next.
Aiding the Creston/O-M cause in a major way was junior Carson Whittington whose 155 edged three other golfers by a single stroke for the inividual title. Whittington adds a title to his 5th place finish last year and 8th place showing as a freshman. He was four strokes off the lead after day one, but his day two 75 vaulted him to the top of the pack.
Hunter Sickels and Trey Thompson each shot 161 to tie for 10th. Sam Hartstock contributed a 170 to round out the winning scorecard.
