(Ames) An impressive 2013 boys golf season for Atlantic came to an end over the weekend with an 8th place finish at state. The team entered the 3A meet in Ames with high expectations after having shot a 304 in the district tournament at Carroll the prior week.
Atlantic's Friday team total of 339 had the squad 19 strokes off the lead heading into day two. The Trojans were unable to make up any ground over the final 18 holes of the tournament. Their 336 on Saturday gave them a 675 final score which was only good enough for 8th place in the 9 team field.
Evan Schuler posted the top finish for Atlantic. The junior tied for 22nd with a 165 (85, 80). Sam Markham was two strokes back 83, 84-167. Other Atlantic scores had Travis Olsen shooting 169, Ben Nelson 174, Nick Barry 177, and Cooper Zablock 196.
Atlantic graduates three seniors from this year's varsity group.
