(Oakland) The Riverside boys soccer team posted one of their biggest wins in program history last night by knocking off perennial power St. Albert. They beat the Falcons 2-1 in two overtimes to advance to the substate final. Malachi Dillon had the game winning goal in the 2nd overtime.
The win puts the Bulldogs on the doorstep of a state tournament berth. Coach John Thomas says the win over St. Albert was huge on several levels. It has the team just a game away from state. Standing in their way will be a Tri-Center team that they have already defeated twice this season (5-0 and 3-0). Coach Thomas says he knows Tri-Center will 'bring it' but believes he has the better team.
Saturday's substate final will be played at Riverside at noon. Riverside is 11-6 while Tri-Center enters at 5-9. The Trojans advanced with a win over Underwood in Wednesday's sem-final.
A state tournament berth is something the team had their eye on coming into the season. They return a veteran lineup with several juniors that have been three year starters.
