(Exira) Exira-EHK opened up their 2013 baseball season by picking up a 2-1 win over AHST on a cool, and at times, misty night in Exira.
The Spartans and Vikings played scoreless baseball through three and a half inning before Exira-EHK's Tyler Jacobsen smacked a one out double to deep right field. His courtesy runner Lucas Schwery would advance to third on an error and eventually score on a wild pitch to give Exira-EHK the 1-0 advantage heading into the fifth inning. AHST responded immediately with Chris Guthry stroking a lead off double to left center field and scoring later in the inning on a Jay Heiny RBI groundout. It did not take Exira-EHK long to answer back, they re-claimed the lead in the bottom of the inning when Jared Hansen drove in Tabor Anderson with a two-out double off the fence in right field.
Tyler Jacobsen slammed the door shut on AHST in the fifth and the sixth to earn his first victory of the season. He struck out 12 batters while allowing just three hits and two walks. Stephen Jacobsen was the tough-luck loser for AHST on the mound. He struck out eight, gave up five hits, and allowed one walk.
AHST is 0-2 on the season heading into a road contest with Underwood on Friday. Exira-EHK is 1-0 and will hit the road the rest of the week with trips to Audubon and Lenox.
