(Avoca) The AHST baseball season will open up Monday when the Vikings matchup with Nishnabotna. AHST head coach Jason Holst the team will be shorthanded to start the season due to boys substate soccer.

The Vikings have just three seniors and one junior in total which will present an opportunity for a lot of new faces on the diamond. Tyler Robinson is among the key returners. He is entering his fourth season as the starting shortstop. Jake Larsen also is back at catcher for a third season. Joining forces with Walnut has allowed AHST to add another senior in Chris Guthrie who has multiple years of starting experience.

Coach Holst says he's excited about the opener with Nishnabotna to see how the young guys react to being thrown into the fire. He says the Blue Devils will be experienced which will pose problems, but the focus is on getting better with each repetition.

Freshman Jay Heiney will make his varsity debut on the mound in the season opener. AHST is coming off of a 9-14 campaign in 2012.
