(Elk Horn) The co-ed state track meet has the spotlight for the next few days, but right around the corner is the high school baseball and softball season. Competition begins on Monday.
The Exira-EHK Spartan baseball team will get their season underway on Tuesday against AHST. Head coach Tony Petersen has a young squad this year with only one senior out to go along with several sophomores and eighth graders. The Spartans will rely heavily on starting pitcher Tyler Jacobsen who went 9-0 last year with a .99 ERA.
The Spartans though graduate their other key arm, Nolan Parker. To replace his 7-3 record and team leading 91 strikeouts, the team will turn to sophomore Zach Kliefoth. Coach Petersen speaks highly of the work that both Kliefoth and Jacobsen have put in so far. Jared Hansen and Brady Hansen will round out the pitching staff.
Offensively, the team loses four of their top five hitters from last year. The one returning from that group is lone senior Tabor Anderson who hit over .300 last year.
Coach Petersen looks for CAM to be a favorite in the conference due to their experience. The Spartans are the three-time defending rolling hills conference champ.
