(Fort Dodge) Former Atlantic track standout Tyler Hovey, a freshman at Iowa Central Community College, is just inches away from a couple of school records.
Last spring as an Atlantic High School senior Hovey won the Class 3A discus title with a throw of 187-09 and finished sixth in the shot put with a throw of 52-08 for Atlantic. During his freshman season at Iowa Central Hovey is close to erasing the school records in the shot and discus.
Hovey has already qualified for the National Junior College meet in the Shot Put and Discus and will be competing at Regional's this Saturday at Iowa Western Community College. His gaol is to help his team win teh regional title. His other goal is to break the school records in both the shot put and discus. The mark to beat in teh discus is 158-00 and he has already thrown 157-09.
Hovey says he always sets the bar high for himself, but admits his performance in the shot put has exceeded his expectations. He is coming off a strong indoor season where he set the shot put record at the Region XI Indoor Championships this past winter.
