(Des Moines) Harlan takes on Benton Community in the first round of the Class 4A girl’s state basketball tournament Tuesday night at 6:45. On paper the teams are matched nearly as close as they could possibly be.
Both teams have a 21-2 overall record. They each rank in the top three in the state in points per game, field goal percentage, and average margin of victory.
3rd ranked Benton Community is led by UNI recruit Madison Weekly’s 18.8 points per game. Weekly has made a state leading 61 three-pointers this year. Coach Zach Klaassen says the main objective for 8th ranked Harlan's defense will be to limit Weekly's touches.
Given what’s a stake and a vastly different atmosphere compared to any games so far this year, Coach Klaassen says the first quarter will be a key. In his pregame interview for the state quarterfinals, he reiterates the fact that the team is not just content with getting to the state tourney.
For Harlan this is their 10th state tournament appearance and first since 2009. Benton has qualified for state each of the past three seasons.
