(Harlan) Solid defense and balanced scoring led the Harlan Cyclones to a 19-2 regular season record in girls basketball year. Strong defense and balanced scoring was exactly what led Harlan past Carroll 71-36 Saturday night as Harlan picked up their 20th win of the season in the Class 4A Region 8 Semi-Final.
Twelve different Cyclones scored in the win that puts the team just a game away from another state tournament trip. The 71 points scored matches the 3rd highest offensive output this season. Jess Schaben scored 13 points, Elle Kloewer added a dozen, and freshman Taylor Frederick had 10. The 36 points from Carroll marks the 16th time that a Harlan opponent has failed to reach 40. Harlan collected 13 steals and blocked 9 shots in Saturday's win.
Standing in the way of the 8th ranked Cyclones is #15 Perry. Those squads will meet up at Carroll High School Tuesday night with a state tourney appearance on the line. Harlan has qualified for the state tournament nine times with the most recent coming in 2009. Perry comes in with a 16-5 record compared to Harlan's 20-2 mark.
