(Exira) The Exira-EHK Spartan football team never game up despite a large defecit and defeated Glidden-Ralston 39-36.
Glidden-Ralston raced out to an 18-0 lead after the first quarter and found themselves up 24-7 at halftime. Early in the second half the Wildcats kept the pressure on with an early TD to go up 30-7. That' s when Spartan quarterback Drew Peppers put the team on his back. The sophomore carried the ball 32 times in the game for 237 yards. Peppers reeled off four second half touchdowns giving him 12 rushing TD's in three playoff games. D. Pepper's third TD came on a fourth and four play when he scored from 60 yards out. Following that run, a two-point conversion attempt that would have tied the game was unsuccesful. Two plays later, Glidden-Ralston star running back Mitchell Lensch zipped down the left sideline for a 73 yard TD to put Glidden-Ralston up 36-28 with 4:05 remaining. Exira-EHK drove down the field to tie it up with a Drew Pepper 5 yard TD run at the 1:39 mark of the 4th quarter. Needing a two-point conversion to tie the game, the Spartans went to Nick Peppers who converted on a toss to the left side. The Spartans were able to get the ball back late in the game and drive down to the one yard line with :04 left on the clock. That's when Zach Kliefoth lined up for the game winning field goal and knocked it through the uprights to give the Spartans the 39-36 comeback win.
