(Stanton) Stanton Vikings football fans are experiencing a season unlike any other that they have seen in a long, long time if ever. After being among the state's most elite eight-player programs for the past decade, declining numbers caught up with the football squad this year in their 0-5 start.
Fortunately for the Vikings they were able to rise from the ranks of the winless teams with a 20-16 win over Essex/South Page. Jeff Marshall ran for 165 yards on 31 carries on offense. He was also very busy on defense with 20 tackles and one fumble recovery which he returned for a touchdown from 8 yards out. Marshall also added an interception adding to his terrific season he's has so far, he ranks 4th in 8-player football with is 92 tackles on the season.
Cade Confer and Kyle Peterson also stood out on both sides of the ball. They each ran for a TD and combined for 32 tackles. Austin Bechtold added 16 tackles as the Stanton defense gave up their lowest amount of points all year long. Their previous low was 39 in the season opener.
Stanton has a tough road ahead to close out the regular season schedule. They'll take on CAM, Sidney, and Nishnabotna over the next three weeks. We will broadcast the Stanton at CAM game this Friday night on KSOM.
