(Denison) With a 3-2 win over Carroll, the Harlan Cyclones return to the Class 3A State Baseball Tournament for the 2nd straight year.
Harlan got good nights at the plate from Ben Bruck, Derek Leinen, and Nate Gettys plus quality pitching from Zach Osborn and Ben Bruck to eliminate Carroll in the Class 3A Susbtate Final last (Wednesday) night in Denison. Ben Bruck went 4-4 with two RBI’s, Derek Leinen went 3-3 with two runs scored, and Nate Gettys finished 1-1 with two walks and one run scored. Starting pitcher Zach Osborn threw the first five innings and held Carroll to two runs on four hits, two walks, and two hit batters. Ben Bruck allowed three walks and no hits over the final two innings and goes down as the winning pitcher.
Harlan scored first when they mounted a two out rally in the second inning. Sophomore Derek Leinen reached on an infield single, Josh Bruck bunted for a hit, Nate Gettys walked, and Ben Bruck delivered an RBI single to plate the games first run. The game stood at 1-0 in Harlan’s favor until the fifth inning when Carroll plated each of their runs. Steven Dreesman drove Will Norgard and Anthony Beyerink to give Carroll a 2-1 advantage. Harlan’s response came in the sixth when Leinen reach on a walk and saw teammates Nate Getty’s Ben Bruck and Denny Kramer all collect base hits to reclaim the lead at 3-2. Needing one run to keep their season alive, Carroll put their lead off man aboard in the 7th inning but Harlan catcher David Ratigan was able to throw out Anthony Beyerink trying to steal second. The next two batters went down in order for a 1-2-3 seventh inning.
27-7 Harlan advances to the Class 3A State Tournament where they finished as the runner up last year. Carroll bows out at 19-14.
