(State) In Class 1A and 2A baseball a win tonight will advance teams to the state tournament. Entering play this evening sixteen teams remain alive in each class. Tonight’s substate final games will whittle that down to an eight team state tournament field.
Class 1A games in this area include St. Albert against Treynor and Coon Rapids-Bayard taking on Earlham. 21-6 St. Albert is trying to advance to state for the second straight year with 29-4 Treynor standing in their way. The Cardinals of Treynor have won nine straight games entering the substate final against 5th ranked St. Albert, the very team that ended their season last year.
Also in 1A 26-8 Coon Rapids-Bayard goes toe-to-toe with conference nemesis Earlham. Earlham is 20-10 on the season. They’ve lost two close games against Coon Rapids-Bayard this year in West Central Conference play but they are coming off of a win over 9th ranked Van Meter.
Another game of note in Class 1A is two time defending state champion Martensdale-St. Marys. The 3rd ranked Blue Devils had their historic win streak snapped in their second game of the season and have lost five times this year, but they have also won 36 games and they take on 25-9 Twin Cedars-Bussey. The last team to win three straight Class 1A state titles was Norway, the inspiration from The Final Season movie. Norway won four in a row from 1981 to 1984
In Class 2A it is a pair of Hawkeye 10 teams matching up. 25-11 Kuemper Catholic goes against 11-18 Clarinda. Despite losing their final eight games of the regular season Clarinda rebounded in the District Tourney to eliminate Underwood and Tri-Center. Kuemper Catholic ousted OA-BCIG and East Sac County in the first two rounds. The Knights have come out on top in 11 straight games and have only given up a total of eight runs in that span. Kuemper defeated Clarinda in both games of their conference double header this season 2-0 and 7-1.
