DENNE SCORES GAME WINNING RUN IN 9TH FOR GRISWOLD

(Griswold) It took nine innings but the Griswold Tigers picked up a comeback win to advance to the second round of the Class 2A Regional Softball Tournament.

The Griswold Tigers move on to play IKM-Manning after their 5-4 win over the Audubon Wheelers on Tuesday night.

Griswold senior Rachel Denne scored the game winning run after she led off the inning with a single and scored all the way from first on a Jackie Rush bunt. After the throw to first based deflected off of Rush's helmet and into right field, Denne began her race for the plate and slid in ahead of the throw.

The extra innings game was a see-saw battle from the start. Audubon scored the games first run when Lacy Vokt reached on an error in the first and scored on a Marissa Haubrich RBI single.

Griswold took their first lead with a pair of runs in the third. Payton Rush and Alyx Flippin each singled and scored to lead 2-1. The lead grew to 3-1 in the fourth when Griswold's Hanna Willms led of the inning with a walk and came into score on a Payton Rush bloop single to shallow right field.

With Griswold up by two runs entering the sixth and Audubon down to their final six outs of the season the Wheelers stormed back with four consecutive hits to start the inning. Vokt, Kasey Porsch, M. Haubrich, and Tiffany Wittrock all singled in the three run sixt to give Audubon a 4-3 lead.

The Wheelers kept the momentum going by setting down Griswold in order in the sixth, but the Tigers rallied in the seventh. Larissa Backhaus led off the seventh with a walk, moved to second on a bunt, and advanced to third on a fly ball out to center field. Backhaus would score the game tying run on a J. Rush single to center.

After a scoreless eighth inning, Griswold set down Audubon in order in the top of the 9th thanks to a pick-off throw and a line drive double play. The solid defense late in the game led to Denne scoring the game winning run in the 9th.
