(Denison) Gunnar Blum struck out 14 batters and cracked a two run homer as Atlantic downed Denison-Schleswig to improve to 17-8 overall and 12-4 in the conference.
The Trojan’s picked up a 10-5 victory over the Monarchs in Denison Monday night. Each team got on the board early with Gunnar Blum giving Atlantic a 2-0 lead with his homer in the top of the first inning only to see Brady Thies answer back with a two run homer of his own in the bottom of the first.
Atlantic kept the pressure on with a two out, two run rally in the second. Kray Lukehart got things started with a walk followed by Blake Esbeck and Chad Christensen with RBI singles. With Atlantic leading 4-2 in the bottom of the third Denison-Schleswig responded with one run in the third. Atlantic extended their lead to 6-3 with a three run fourth. Tyler Hovey began the fourth with a hit followed by a Christian Holzapfel double. Kray Lukehart walked and Blake Esbeck had an RBI single in the three run fourth inning. Denison-Schleswig kept the game close with a one run fifth but Atlantic put up another three run inning in the sixth to lead 10-4. Denison-Schleswig scored one more run in the fifth to make it a 10-5 final.
Blum earns the win for Atlantic on the mound. Blum, a senior lefty, moves to 4-2 on the year. He struck out 14 while allowing 7 walks and 4 hits. The losing pitcher was Tanner Petersen who struck out 11 runs and allowed five walks and six hits.
Denison-Schleswig drops to 12-15 this season. Atlantic stays alive in the Hawkeye 10 conference race with a key matchup against Glenwood slated for Thursday.
