(Carroll) Atlantic held off Kuemper, Catholic, Carroll 9-8 in a Hawkeye Ten Conference Baseball game Monday night at Carroll Stadium.

The Trojans jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first inning after back to back singles by Blake Esbeck and Chad Christensen followed by Gunner Blum’s three-run blast over the center field fence. The Trojans tacked three more runs on the board with Austin Conrad’s single. Chris McVey walked, Derek Stork reached base on an error and Tyler Hovey singled in a run. The other two Trojan runs were scored on two errors.

Kuemper got on the board in the bottom of the second on Alex Drees solo homerun. The Knights scored four more runs in the fourth, and tied the game 7-7 in the fifth.


The Trojans scored two more in the top of the sixth to take a 9-7 lead. But, Adam Schliesman narrowed the gap for Kuemper in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch.


The Knights had an opportunity in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Knights had the winning run at the plate with one on and one out. However, Chris Uhlenkamp hit a ground ball to Trojan Shortstop Chad Christensen. He tossed it Derek Stork at second who relayed the ball to first for the Trojans third double-play of the night. "The last one was the sweetest," said Atlantic Head Coach Trace Petersen after the game.

 Blake Esbeck finished the night with three singles, and Tyler Hovey and Chad Christensen each had a pair of hits for the (11-5) Trojans.


Chris Halbur led (10-10) Kuemper offensively with a single, a double and two RBI’s. Chris Uhlenkamp, added to the Knights’ effort with a 2-RBI double in the fourth inning.
