(State) Red Oak’s Kate Walker was eliminated from the state tennis tournament in Class 1A following her loss in the consolation quarterfinals to Jenna Wilkinson of Independence. Walker won her first round match 6-1, 6-2 over Gabby Greco of Waterloo, but fell to the back side of the bracket when she was upended by #4 seed Amanda Stefanik of Oskaloosa 6-4, 6-2. Also in Class 1A singles, Casey Dean of Clarinda is out of the tournament after losing each of her matches yesterday. Dean lost 6-0, 6-3 in the first round to Casey Stanek of Bishop Heelan and was eliminated with her 6-4, 6-4 by Wilkinson from Independence.
In Class 1A Doubles, Glenwood’s Rachel Tucker and Grace Newman and Denison-Schleswig’s Cassity Ipsen and Rachel Ingram have both been eliminated after losing their first two matches yesterday. Shenandoah’s duo of Kimberly Graf and Mackenzie Johnson won twice yesterday to move into the semi-finals and guarantee themselves a place. Graf and Johnson will play Lindsay McGonegle and Lindsay McManus of Waterloo Columbus today in the semi’s.
In Class 2A singles, Abby Bersten of Lewis Central went 2-1 on the first day of the tournament and will compete in the Consolation semi-finals today against Katie Melbourne of Pleasant Valley.
