(Des Moines) State Long Jump or District Golf Tournament?
That was the question Atlantic Junior Sam Markham had to consider late last week. Many would be happy to have either opportunity, but for Markham is created a tough choice.
The Trojan's #2 golfer and top long jumper leaped a season best 21-10'5 at the state track qualifying meet on Thursday and then fired a six-over-par 75 the next day to place in the top ten at the sectional golf tournament at Atlantic Golf and Country Club.
Even though Markham had chosen golf as his primary sport at the start of the spring, this unique opportunity presented the multi-talented athlete with a complex decision to make.
After carefully considering his options with family, friends, and coaches, Markham deemed being the #1 seed in the long jump as a once in a lifetime opportunity.
That decision sent him east to Des Moines for the state track meet, while his golf teammates travelled north to Carroll Country Club in hopes of advancing to the state golf tournament.
Before Markham jumped he texted his golf teammates good luck and they sent the same best wishes in return. Markham would go on leap another season best and place 3rd in the 3A long jump.
With golf as his primary sport, Markham attended track practice sparingly and rarely worked on jumping during those practices. He competed in just five track meets all season. Next year as a senior he plans to focus solely on golf.
