(Des Moines) Atlantic Senior Discus thrower Tyler Hovey said this week that when he was a freshman he never dreamt he would be seeded number 1 coming into the state track meet in Des Moines Thursday. Not only did Hovey live up to his billing, he exceeded expectations with a record setting state championship throw of 187-9.00.
Hovey’s big throw erased a 32-year-old record 179-07, by Matt Havens, of Independence in 1980. Hovey’s throw would’ve also bettered the Class 1A and 2A state meet records. He also set an Atlantic High School record, surpassing some of the elite discuss throwers including Jon Pelzer, Blake Larsen and Kasey Juhl. Hovey will compete in the Shot Put Friday morning with the fifth best throw.
