NODAWAY VALLEY HEADS TO BOYS STATE TOURNAMENT WITH 22-2 RECORD

(Greenfield) Nodaway Valley punched their ticket to Wells Fargo Arena with a 49-41 win over Exira-EHK at SWCC in Creston on Saturday night. In front of a packed house, the Wolverines overcame an early deficit and hung on for the win. Exira-EHK grabbed an early 4-0 lead and the teams went back and forth the rest of the half. The late stages of the second quarter featured a number of lead changes and the teams went into the locker room tied at 20. Nodaway ouscored Exira-EHK 17-8 in the third quarter and started to take control in the fourth quarter when the Wolverines scored on several consecutive possessions down the stretch. Nodaway Valley led by an 8-12 point gap for nearly the entire 4th quarter.

The Wolverines got a big lift from Zach Plymesser off the bench who filled in for the injured Dean Frank and scored 9 points including a couple of key three-pointers in the second half. Brad Baudler and Alex Welsch each scored in double figures and all seven players that saw playing time scored for Nodaway Valley.

Zach Himmelberg tried to carry Exira-EHK on his back, the senior scored 21 points and played all 32 minutes. Exira-EHK got big contributions in the first half by Kael Hoflen and and Dylan Parker who combined to go 6-6 shooting (3-3 for each) in the first half for 13 points, but the scoring balance wasn't there for the Spartans in the 2nd half. Exira-EHK's season comes to an end with a 22-2 record.
