(Walnut) On an emotional night in Walnut, the Warriors boys picked up a 56-46 win over Paton-Churdan.
Tuesday night marked the final home game in Warrior boys basketball history as Walnut will enter into a sharing agreement with AHST in the fall of 2012. Walnut jumped on top of Paton-Churdan early and held a 19-6 first quarter lead. Senior Zach Hemmingsen went 4-4 from the three-point line in the first half and the Warriors held a comfortable 33-22 halftime lead. A 10-2 run to start the third quarter would bump the Walnut advantage up to 21 points in the second half. Paton-Churdan made a late 9-0 run to cut the lead to 8 in the fourth quarter, but Walnut was able to hit 11 second half free-throws to hang on for the 56-46 win. Senior Lucas Blum led the way with 22 points. Zach Hemmingsen (15) and Jared Ploen (13) were also in double figures. Chris Guthery contributed 4 points and Ty Johnk tallied two. All eight of the Warriors that suited up were able to get into the game.
Walnut moves to 8-11 with three games remaining in the regular season. The Warriors will play at East Mills in the first round of the District Tournament.
