(Exira)The Exira-EHK Spartans drove the ball 61 yards for a touchdown on their very first drive of the season to set the tone early and secured a convincing 27-8 victory over Audubon Friday night.
Exira-EHK used all running plays to move the ball down the field and score on their first possession. The drive was capped off by an 8 yard TD run by senior quarterback Spencer Smith.
Audubon fumbled the ensuing kickoff and it didn't take Exira-EHK very long to take advantage. On the very next play after the fumble, Smith connected with Lucas Mortensen on a 32 yard touchdown pass. After the two point conversion, Exira-EHK led 15-0.
Audubon's first and only score of the game came late in the first half when they scored on a four yard pass from Blair Kerkhoff to Ben Irlmeier. The score was set up by an interception and long return by Kolton Jensen.
Audubon would score again a safety in the third quarter to get things back to a one possession game, but Exira-EHK put the game away with their running game in the fourth quarter. Smith added two more scores on the ground with runs from one and seven yards out.
The Spartans move to 1-0 with the 27-8 victory. They will host DM Christian next week. 0-1 Audubon will travel to Guthrie Center in Week 2.
