Exira-EHK Once Again on the Verge of trip to Fort Dodge

(Kimballton) For the 3rd straight season Exira-EHK will play in a regional softball final. This time around the Spartans take on Martensdale-St. Mary's in Greenfield Monday night.

Two years ago Exira-EHK lost to Charter Oak-Ute in a regional final while last year they came up short against Newell-Fonda. This year they come in at 24-1 and hold the #8 ranking. Their opponent, Martensdale St. Marys, is 24-4 and ranked #6 in the state.

After a mostly dominant regular season, Exira-EHK has been tested so far in the regional tournament. They trailed on multiple occasions in their first round 6-5 win over Stanton and then trailed 2-0 early on against Essex before winning 7-2.

Martensdale-St. Marys on the other hand has breezed through the first two rounds. They won 11-1 against Guthrie Center and 11-0 over CAM. It's worth noting the Blue Devils are yet to have played a team with a winning record this postseason.

Rachel Smith has posted dominant numbers for the Spartans this year. The junior pitcher has an ERA of .10 with an average strikeout rate of 2.11 per inning. Kennedy Madsen leads the Exira-EHK offense hitting over .500 on the year with 5 home runs.

Martensdale-St. Marys is an offensive power house, they lead the state for Class 1A with a team batting average of .416. Five players hit over .400 including Nicole Schutt and Jamie Jordan who are both hitting .500 or better. The Blue Devils average 9.68 runs per game.

Tonight's game will be played in Greenfield at 7:00p.m. The game will be broadcast on KSOM. The winner advances to state.
