7-Run 5th Inning Highlights Audubon's win over Adair-Casey

(Coon Rapids) Every team's goal is to play their best when the postseason arrives. The Audubon Wheelers seem to be doing just that as they beat Adair-Casey 10-0 Saturday night in a Class 1A District 14 contest. This win comes just days after the Wheelers beat Guthrie Center 4-2 in a good showing to end the regular season.

Not only was the 10-0 win for Audubon their widest margin of victory all year, it was the team's first shutout since June 18th of 2012. Tyler Rhieboff was the winning pitcher for the Wheelers.  The 8th grader allowed only five base runners all night. Two of them earned their way on via base hits, one on a walk, one on a fielders choice, and one on an error. He struck out 10 batters including striking out the side in both the 1st and the 6th.

A seven run 5th inning turned a 2-0 game into a route as Audubon pounded out seven hits in the big frame and all of the runs were earned. Colby Rattenborg had two hits, 2 RBI, and a run scored in the 5th inning alone. It was an inning that saw Riebhoff, Riley Jones, Elijah Zaiger, Nolan Smith, and Mitchell Nelsen all have hits and score runs.  Zaiger drove in two runs, while Smith, Nelsen, and Riebhoff all drove in one run apeice.

The game came to an end via the mercy rule in the 6th when Collin Subbert had a base hit, advanced to 2nd on a Zaiger walk, and scored on a Smith single.

Adair-Casey's only hits came from Logan Dinkla in the 2nd and Connor Westergard in the 3rd.  Westergaard's outfield assist from left field retiring Riley Jones at the plate in the 5th inning was one of the lone bright spots for the Bombers who bow out at 3-19. The team graduates four seniors: Brad Patterson, James Grubbs, Chris Draman, and Logan Dinkla.

Audubon will take on 23-7 Coon Rapids-Bayard at Coon Rapids on Tuesday. It's game two of a doubleheader with the first game being Glidden-Ralston and Woodward-Granger. The winners meet Thursday in Coon Rapids in the district semi-finals.
