(Iowa City) Red Oak's Kate Walker finished 2nd at the Girls state tennis tournament. The junior lost 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 to #1 seed Haley Resnick of Davenport Assumption in the championship match this afternoon. Walker zipped through the field to get to the championship match with wins of 6-0, 6-2, then 6-0, 6-0, and 6-1, 6-1. Walker has bettered her 5th place finish from a year ago.
Red Oak also has another place winner at state this year. It's Paige Vannausdle who efeated Emily Ahlers of LeMars in the 5th place match.
Red Oak's doubles team of Erica Sherman and Grace Blomstedt placed fourth after losing to Lindsay McManus and Lauren McManus of Waterloo Columbus in the 3rd place match: 6-3, 3-6 1-0.
Soutwest Iowa's two other doubles teams were eliminated in the consolation quarterfinals and will not place. That includes the team of Kayla Rodgers/Sarah Cabeen, of Clarinda, and Audrey Fyock/Jenna Taylor, of Creston.
In 2A singles, Abby Bergsten, of Lewis Central, finished 8th after losing int he 7th place matchup. Bergsten lost 6-7, 6-1, 1-0(7) in the consolation semi-finals earlier Friday to Alex Kozlowski, of DM Roosevelt.
