FATAL ACCIDENT MADE HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY TEXTING
(COUNCIL BLUFFS) A fatal accident in rural Pottawattamie County on July 17th may have been caused by texting while driving.
The Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office says 19-year-old Elizabeth Chadwick was traveling southbound on Old Lincoln Highway with her passenger, 18-year-old Jennifer Weinfurtner. The 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse veered off the roadway to the west when Chadwick over-corrected, causing the vehicle to enter back onto the road sideways in front of a 2006 Ford Econoline Wagon that was northbound. Chadwick and Weinfurtner were both killed in the accident.
Upon further investigation by the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office, it was discovered that Chadwick had placed a phone call at 11:10 p.m. and then sent a text message at 11:11 p.m. The accident was reported at 11:14 p.m. A toxicology report indicates that alcohol was not a factor, however; trace amounts of marijuana was found in both Chadwick and Weinfurtner’s toxicology reports.
Further investigation shows that the Ford Econoline was traveling under the speed limit and the driver made no improper actions.
