(Des Moines) Emotional testimony was given at a Statehouse news conference this morning.
“Sick Iowans do not know that they need medical cannabis until it is too late, until their lives are already destroyed,” said Maria La France.
La France, and Iowa mom, is pleading for passage of a bill that would allow the medical use of marijuana.
She added, “Please Iowans; let this bill get to a hearing so that we can discuss this important issue for Iowa’s healthiest state initiative.”
La France’s son suffers from epileptic seizures. She claims medical cannabis could help make him better.
But, even the sponsor of a bill that would legalize the medical use of cannabis says the bill is “dead on arrival” this week. Senator Joe Bolkcom says this week’s funnel deadline and the lack of Republican support means he’ll have to wait until next year to see if he can get the bill passed.
La France says she may just be a “naïve mom”, but she’s not giving up hope lawmakers will find a way to pass the bill yet this year. She says she’s also hoping the Iowa Board of Pharmacy will act to reclassify marijuana to allow medicinal uses.
