(Nevada) It may be the middle of February, but there are stores and restaurants in Iowa that are serving locally-grown produce.
The availability of the fresh and local food in the dead of winter is the result of some farmers expanding their growing seasons with the use of hoop houses or green houses. Lee Madsen with Lee's Greens in Nevada says they are now growing things year round and the demand is strong.
"A lot of people want that local produce to know who is growing it and where it is coming from."
In addition to the salad greens hoop houses are also being used to grow early tomatoes, summer squash and cucumbers outside of what is considered the normal growing season in Iowa.
