HIGH NITRATE LEVELS REPORTED IN LEWIS DRINKING WATER
(Lewis) High levels of nitrate have been found in the drinking water in Lewis. Lewis residents are being asked not to give water to infants under six months old or use it to make infant formula. Sample results recieved today showed nitrate levels of 11 mg/L which is above the nitrate standard or maximum contaminant level of 10 mg/L. Infants below the age of six months who drink water containing nitrate over the maximum contaminant level could become seriously ill. Symptoms inclued shortness of breath and blu baby syndrome. Bottled water should be used for infants until further notice. Confirmation samples of the Lewis drinking water will be taken on Monday.
